The PCA9685 is a 16-channel, 12-bit PWM/servo driver with an I2C interface. You want to create a fun robot, possibly a hexapod walker, or perhaps just a dynamic work of art. Or perhaps you want to use accurate PWM output to operate several LEDs. You become aware that your microcontroller only has a certain number of PWM outputs. Purchase this convenient PWM and servo driver breakout. As soon as we saw this chip, we saw what a great addition it would be. Control 16 free-running PWM outputs using just two pins! Even better, you can link 62 breakouts together to control up to 992 PWM outputs (which would be just wonderful). It is a PWM driver that is I2C-controlled and has a built-in clock. This indicates that it is entirely free-operating and does not require constant signal transmission like the TLC5940 series does, freeing up your microcontroller. It is 5V compliant, allowing you to securely drive up to 6V outputs while controlling it from a 3.3V microcontroller (useful for controlling white or blue LEDs with 3.4+ forward voltages). There are 6 address select pins, allowing for the wiring of up to 62 of them on a single I2C bus for a total of 992 outputs. Adjustable-frequency PWM with 12-bit resolution for each output and a maximum of 1.6 KHz; for servos, this equates to a resolution of around 4 u at a 60 Hz update rate. Push-pull or open-drain output that is configurable Pin for output enables you to rapidly turn off all of the outputs. This wonderful chip was packaged inside a breakout board with a few pleasant additions. Power input terminal block (or use the 0.1″ breakouts on the side) protection against reverse polarity at the terminal block input Powerful green LED 16 servos can be connected simultaneously using 3 pin connections in groups of 4 (servo plugs are slightly wider than 0.1″; therefore, only 4 can be stacked next to each other on a 0.1″ header).
